i had no trouble getting into the game and into the career mode. i did notice that if i hit one of the speed bumps while trying to get into the game, the game would freeze up on me for a few seconds. but it didn’t seem to effect my game. i also noticed that there was no music playing as the game was loading. after about 10 minutes, the game finally loaded and i was able to start playing. after the tutorial, i got to the first of the six career levels that you can play in. i didn’t like the controls at first, but once i got used to them, i found them pretty good. i found the car selection to be a bit lacking, but it’s still a lot better than the previous version. there are a lot of cars to choose from, though not as many as the previous version. i found the car customization to be great, though. i wasn’t really able to get a grasp on how it works, but i was able to customize my car up to five different ways. i found the track selection to be great. there are about 30 different tracks in the game, and each one has a few different variations. it’s a lot of fun to drive around different environments, and it’s really easy to get a feel for the various tracks.
in addition to having all of the major trophies at your disposal from the outset, the game has a number of different challenges you can pursue. some of them are pretty obvious, like winning a race, and others are more obscure, like picking up a driver that you like and finding a street where he or she likes to drive. as you progress through the game, you’ll unlock things like unique cars, custom paint jobs, and the like, and you can spend a small amount of cash to buy these things out of the box. it’s a nice touch, as it really provides you with a leg up when you’re starting out, but there are also some things in the game that you can only buy with real money, like a ride in a golden car, or the ability to drive around in front of a parade. the real cash-grabs, though, are the heaps of cash you can earn by racing. you’ll start off with very little cash, but you’ll be given an amount of it at the beginning of each race. you’ll use that money to purchase special upgrades for your car that’ll let you either collect more money, or save you a few seconds during a race. the base car for the game is the corvette, and you’ll start off with one of four colors (blue, red, silver or black). as you go through the game and pick up cars, you’ll also pick up the ability to customize them as well. for instance, you’ll start with a red car, but as you fill up with cash, you’ll be able to customize it to any of the other colors. there’s also a fairly deep customization system with the cars themselves. you can make them look like any of the other different cars you can collect, and you can even make them look like a specific character or model of car. there are a variety of different things you can add as well, like spoilers, custom paint jobs, and even custom seats.
best of all, this is not just a new patch, but a big update with new cars, new tracks, new weather effects, and a new track editor, so you can make your own multiplayer racing fantasy world. some other big new features include map downloads and new cheats, new money hack and money cheats, and a new training mode. it also fixes some bugs, and now includes the option to free up some of your money to give you a better car to drive.
the races take place in a standard point-to-point format, with two to four players driving around, fighting for first place in a given race. you can select different classes of vehicles, which can include everything from the ubiquitous miata to tanks and even speed boats. the races are entirely point-to-point, and as long as one player makes it to the finish line first, everyone who was racing can get their cash and points for the event. this is a good thing, because the game can be a little bit long-winded at times. in addition to the point-to-point races, there are also “crossovers,” in which the entire track will be divided into sections, and players will have to drive around or through the various sections to reach a designated finish. these can be very long affairs, and it’s entirely possible to get lost in one of them if you’re not paying attention, so if you don’t mind a little more time behind the wheel, try to find some crossover races.
one of the few complaints we had with the free version of test drive unlimited was the lack of offline races. it’s not like you can’t play them, as they’re in the game, but you can’t do them from the free version. if you’re tired of racing around the city streets, the game will still do well enough without you, especially if you don’t happen to have a huge car collection. there are still plenty of other options if you’re looking for some offline action. you can drive the city’s freeways in both player and ranked matches, and the races are just as good. while the game won’t allow you to play in the crossovers or ranked matches, you can still play them. they’ll just be against other players that you’ll have to find online if you want to play them. if you’re really a city racer, you can even use the online racer’s cars and race them without ever having to drive in an open online race.
