Starting with a Surface
Although Photoshop’s structure is very much like that of other Adobe programs, it’s actually a standalone program with its own folder structure. Unlike other Adobe programs, you can open Photoshop without needing a previous installation of that program on your computer.
You can easily open Photoshop using Photoshop Elements by selecting the option to start with the Organizer, shown in Figure 2-5. If you don’t have the Organizer and want to open Photoshop, choose Photoshop Standard when you first start the program. For more on the Organizer, see Chapter 3.
To use Photoshop on a Mac, do a quick search of your Mac’s contents to find and open the folder where Photoshop is located. If you haven’t installed Photoshop yet, you must download the program from the Adobe website (www.adobe.com/products/photoshop). You can then open the program from the CD or the DVD that comes with the program by going to the folder where you found the program and choosing the Photoshop program from the menu bar.

Examining layers
Layers are the fundamental building blocks of images in Photoshop, and they represent the elements that are stacked above one another. Photoshop’s Design and Edit tabs display the layers in the image you open, allowing you to see all the layers in the image without having to open them individually. The Layers panel allows you to access or change the settings for any layer.
If you have multiple layers in an image, you can go to the Layers panel in the Window menu and choose layers from the menu that appears. This example shows three layers displayed in the Layers panel: Black and White, Details, and Blue (see Figure 2-6).

Photoshop Elements offers a more streamlined approach to layers than does Photoshop, as shown in Figure 2-7. The Elements window displays the layers in the image in a window that has many of the same features as Photoshop’s Layers panel, but it’s easier to use. You also have access to more features, such as the ability to create your own custom layers.

Israel is to vote on a plan to annex large swaths of the West Bank, including the largest settlement blocs, and declare all or part of the territory it occupies, including the Jordan Valley, areas captured in the Six Day War and land claimed by the Palestinians.
Israeli lawmakers are expected to approve the controversial bill on Monday. It will be submitted for the government’s approval, which could take place next week.
The bill, which has faced vehement opposition from Palestinians, would be the most far-reaching bill ever passed by the Israeli parliament, the Knesset.
The Palestinians have called it “dangerous”, “unilateral” and “racist”.
The resolution proposed by Jewish Home party leader Naftali Bennett would shape the final shape of a two-state solution to the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians.
Palestinians want a capital in East Jerusalem and the West Bank, while Israel claims all of Jerusalem as its capital, as well as the West Bank — home to key sites holy to Jews, Muslims and Christians.
The territories occupied in the 1967 Six Day War include the Gaza Strip and some 150 settlements.
The territories would be annexed, meaning they would become part of Israel but the Palestinians would continue to live in them under the sovereignty of an internationally recognised Palestinian state.

Bennett wants to make “Jerusalem the capital of Israel” and see the entire West Bank and the Jordan Valley as “disputed” territory, or land that is “laid to the sword” – an expression used by Israeli prime ministers in the past to make an implicit reference to the destruction of the Old City of Jerusalem and the killing of Palestinians who live in the city, for example during the first Palestinian intifada in 1987.
The proposed resolution makes no mention of the Gaza Strip.
Palestinians want a future state in what is now the West Bank and the Gaza Strip, with East Jerusalem as its capital, along with the West Bank’s Jordan Valley and the eastern outskirts of the Golan Heights, which was captured from Syria in the Six Day War and annexed in 1981.

A 19-year-old man is now facing child pornography charges after a woman in a relationship with him discovered she was being stalked by an image on the Instagram social media platform.
A 42-year-old man in Midland is facing child pornography charges following an investigation by the RCMP and the Ontario Provincial Police.
According to police, the investigation began in April when the woman in a relationship with the man took her cellphone and discovered her Instagram account had been hacked, and that one of the images had been altered.
The woman then alerted police to the image in question.
The images on the suspect’s phone had been taken on a number of occasions over a short time period and they depicted a minor engaged in sexually explicit conduct.

“I’ve been receiving tips about it and I’m very fortunate that I actually was able to find this,” Staff Sgt. David Hutton told CTV News Toronto on Tuesday.

Hutton said that in this particular case, the identification of the minor was assisted by the victim using the age-verification feature found in Instagram and it would not be possible to do so otherwise.
“The age verification feature allows me to seek verification from Instagram and eventually obtain the identification of that person,” he said.
“It was really helpful in this case because when we did identify the person, we received a lot of tips from the public. They were able to confirm our identification.”
