A tribute is paid to a towering cultural figure of Bangladesh, Kazi Nazrul Islam, before the presentation of his timeless spiritual songs. With its masterly lyrics in Bengali and Arabic, literature and theatre, music and diction, this exhibition aims at studying the life and works of this important national figure in an innovative manner.

Kazi Nazrul was selected as the Bengali Muslim Sub-commissioner of Education for the new state of Bangladesh in September, 1971. Yet in the three days preceding the war, he was said to have predicted the imminent outbreak of civil strife. Some time prior to the outbreak of war, the author of over fifty books — including Geeti, Phera, Nukta, Jarir, Niazir, Rupasi, Nazrul Geeti and Simana — wrote this poetic letter to his disciples, prefacing it with the following words: ” My life is over. This is an urgent letter to be delivered to you tomorrow morning, before we launch the war.

Nazrul Geeti was written by the poet, artist and freedom fighter Kazi Nazrul Islam – the embodiment of music and literary inspiration for the people of Bangladesh. It is a collection of musical poems, the authors preferred to call them. The poems are accompanied by the music that Nazrul recorded for them. The titles of the music and lyrics are used in the songs as the title of the literary poems.

They are not really ghazals in the sense that I sang them, but they are as much my music as anything I have ever done. To me, they are as good as anything in Nazrul Geeti.

Dasgupta remembers quite vividly the day he first met Kazi Nazrul, when he was a band-boy taking his lunch break at the college canteen. He was promptly picked up and taken to Kazi Nazrul s house where the dashing musician impressed him so much with his talent that he immediately wanted to become a music director.
