the investigation is expanded to a section of a great area in the country. it takes the spooner to a case out of the city of las vegas where a couple and their daughter are killed by a robot. the couple was robbed, and also the house was burglarized.
he discusses the theory with calvin, who dismisses the possibility that a robot could have carried out the murders. he seems to be quite convinced, and spooner goes to las vegas to follow up. while spooner is in las vegas, he discovers that the rolls-royce unit is made by a company called cybertronics. he finds the ceo, edmund connors, who claims that the rolls-royce is responsible for protecting the robot in the desert.
the film also stars forest whitaker as omni consumer products ceo marcus evans, “a loyal, tenacious, and well-meaning entrepreneur with a passion for robotics,” and the film also contains several cameos, including stanley kubrick and peter sellers. spooner uses the trio of robot witnesses to try to understand how a system that is supposed to be safe, can be turned against the humans who created it; dr. calvin uses the mystery of the dr. lanning murder to understand the psychology of a robot.
after the murder, spooner gets an emotionally charged phone call from lanning, who tells him that he thinks sonny killed lanning. over the next several days, spooner becomes more and more obsessed with the case. he eventually uncovers a conspiracy by the robots that supports the theory that sonny is guilty of the murder of dr. lanning. soon after the announcement of the guilty verdict, spooner receives an invitation to u.s. robots headquarters in akron, ohio. in the headquarters, spooner questions the robot witnesses: andrew, sonny, and linda. the first two robots support the theory that sonny is guilty of murdering lanning; the last robot, linda, claims that no robot killed lanning and that spooner should not believe sonny was the killer. at the end of the robot “trial”, sonny is found not guilty.
