7. Double Impact (1997) It can sometimes be a bit grating that every Van Damme movie is just the same Van Damme movie. But Double Impact takes that idea and runs with it. And doesnt really start to, you know, live up to the full potential of it until way into its final 15-20 minutes.
Here we have the first of a few films that surprisingly hasnt been remastered by Criterion yet. Making a splash in the martial arts world as well as the movies, Jackie Chan turned down offers to join the super-team of the Shaw Brothers studios because he had dreams of being a concert pianist and had dreams of saving the universe (or something). The Shaw Bros werent quite ready to give up on their star before he proved them wrong. Surprisingly, even today, Chan films are frequently hit and miss. This one is a pretty good one, a little lacking in the acting department, but you can just see the potential in him. Jackie seemed to have a natural gift for physical comedy, and his slapstick flow of violence is wildly entertaining in what is the best Jackie Chan film. And of course, in one of his first feature films, Jackie Chan is one of the archetypical characters: the brash, cocky, wacky, slightly hard-ass hero, with a real belief in his own talents. A broad caricature or archetype, but one that resonates with many Hong Kong moviegoers today. He is said to be the last of the big, colorful character actors from Hong Kong movie theatre, a sentiment that makes a lot of sense today since so many of his co-stars (from Chow Yun Fat to Jet Li to even Danny Lee) are also dead. I know a lot of people say that Cantonese movies arent for them. No, Cantonese isn’t something all martial arts fans should be fluent in, but if you have a discerning palate for film, many Hong Kong and Cantonese movies are surprisingly worth a watch. The biggest single flaw of Drunken Master II is that Jet Li isnt surrounded by good people: except for the blind man, and the mute, all of his co-stars turn out to be boneheads. The one exception is Jim Kelly, whose brand of comic relief is so genuinely funny that we will forgive him any other flaws (in which category he ranks among the top five comedy actors of all time). And although Li misses a chance to show us what he can do with a great story, the film manages to laugh its way through several of these overly-long, one-dimensional action scenes (the finale of which I will now describe the vast majority of you reading this will have already seen for yourself), which are better for their basic, explosive intensity than their substantive emotional depth. Im not sure about you, but I always prefer movies that take me on a wild ride to ones that insist on making me feel anything. T.R. Karnes
In a film full of cool ideas, perhaps the coolest is a set of martial arts pieces drawn from traditional Chinese folklore, executed in a lightweight, high-octane style that almost makes the choreographed fights seem like a friendly after-school activity. The two best of the bunch are the wing chun/kung fu-inspired training sequences, in which the young hero (Jet Li) learns the intricacies of Zui Quan with some of his five disabled elders. Jet Li stars in an action-comedy that is among the best of Wong Fei-hongs career. In this one, he plays a low-rent vigilante who eventually has to partner up with the titular master of wushu to take down a career criminal (James Coburn) who plans to sell the secrets of wushu to foreign baddies. The two spar to a rousing finale on the steps of the Temple of Heaven, and then Jet Li shows us a brief but memorably sublime workout as Wong Fei Hung in his routine for the drill-conscious. This is the kind of stuff we dream about during those strange, high-octane underwater adventures. Jay Slater
