driveclub has multiplayer. you can race against other people online, or you can go head to head with them in a track battle. in the latter, you can see a ghostly image of your opponent’s car. it looks like they’re in a go-kart, which is a bit weird and i find myself waiting for the “beep!” to tell me that the other player crashed. other than that, i was a bit confused with the way the camera worked during the race battle mode. i’m still trying to figure out if it’s really a ghost image of my opponent’s car, or if its just a ghostly image of a guy in a go-kart that is attached to my car.
the truth is that this game and its poor reception had little to do with the state of the franchise’s infrastructure or service. it was mostly because its day-one release was a mess. an entire day after launch, sony’s servers were down entirely after a ton of players got into a multiplayer match. there were a ton of launch bugs and the day-one servers were down for months. the eventual fix didn’t do much to assuage the damage, as it was the installation process that lead to the problems.
in the end, most people who enjoyed the game’s driving mechanics, car designs and its wide variety of different modes loved driveclub. it was just too bad that the game’s launch was so messy and that no one could really be sure what driveclub was. the game was ultimately fixed though, and that gave it a chance at being successful as a full game. it just may have been better to not have had this accident at all, especially when sony promised that the free driveclub would be fixed and running by that time. there were still a lot of problems though, and that was never good for driveclubs survival.
the last major thing that wasnt quite as good as expected was the game itself. you dont always need to compete with other players to know what you did right or wrong. instead of finding out what worked and what didnt work, you can simply tell the game to simulate and your racing career will continue to evolve based on your success and failures in previous events. this system is much more efficient than the traditional career mode, but it also feels like a step back in terms of your role as a player. now you dont need to master any one aspect of driving to be able to unlock new cars and challenge your friends, you just need to do well on the track. unfortunately, its the lack of a traditional career mode that caused driveclub to stagnate with its highly anticipated release. this is one of those games that you have to play to know what you like about it, but at its core driveclub is an action-packed racing game that isnt all that different from its competition, so there isnt a lot to get excited about.

the game has since released on playstation and pc, with both versions receiving an update to include improved lighting and physics. theres also been a 1.5 update on ps4 that lets you connect with friends on psn or the local players on the same console.
