A study by the UK’s National Health Service showed that AutoCAD was used by nearly all of the NHS’ architects.
Autodesk developed its first product in 1979; most of the company’s products before this were bundled software.
First release of AutoCAD R10 in 1983 for $895
The first version of AutoCAD R10 was officially released to manufacturing customers in July 1983 for $895 (about $4,000 in 2019).
Customers could purchase a one-year license that came with a PC XT, and the first 15,000 users received a hardware discount.

Other CAD programs
Autocad was the only CAD program that supported hardware drawing tablet hardware input at the time. Although there were competitors such as Onshape, and other CAD programs have followed suit, Autocad has maintained that it is the only program that can support a complete CAD environment on a single machine.

The Davenport Group was bought by Autodesk for $1.2 billion in 2003. In 2013, Autodesk bought The Design Group, and was renamed Autodesk.
