This surah contains three hadiths of the Prophet which are related in some form to the subject. They are (1) The Quraysh people (2) The communitys victory in the conquest of Makkah, and (3) The communitys solitude in the desert. The second hadith stresses the sensitivity with which the Prophet viewed the tribes whose leaders had rebelled and opposed the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. The themes which we discussed above are the primary features of the surah, and it continues in the same vein. From Makkah to the day of Makkah, the hypocrites, the unbelievers, and the idolaters were joined by the Jews and Christians (3). This surah, and many others in the Quran, are addressed to the Quraysh and emphasise the same themes which we discussed in al-Fajr and al-Shura, albeit in a more powerful and convincing way.
This surah highlights the two types of mankind that were created in the world. They are the genealogists, who trace their genealogical lineage back to the moment of creation itself, and the messengers of God, who convey God’s message to his creation. There is a veiled allusion in the third verse: And We have made of you and those before you generations which We have chosen for hearing and the listening. (5) The first line immediately gives us the information that God Almighty created humankind for the purpose of being in contact with Him. This means that man as an entity and his essence are essentially linked to God. Before any physical need is met, man is drawn to meet God, and to find in Him the substance of all his needs.
