The Turkey sailing season continues until the first week of November, but this Tuesday I was informed that I was to be shipped back to the United States. This is an exciting time for those of us who have been very interested in seeing what type of development can be done on future versions of Windows, and I have been very eager to see the results of this new design.
I see Microsoft has begun a developer program, called the Windows Developer Technical Preview. This program is only for professional developers. It will eventually allow the consumer or enterprise market to participate in this development process. This is very exciting to me, because the intention of the Windows Developer Technical Preview is to beta test the new user interface, and start testing some of the new features in the operating system.
Many of us have seen the preview videos on the Internet. It is really difficult to look at, and to tell what is missing and what is new. The beta program will allow us to take apart the new features, and interact with them, allowing the developers to test everything and make sure that it works as they expect it to.
I have had an opportunity to get a developer certificate. This allows me to access the Windows Technical Preview, and test this new version of Windows, by downloading, installing, and running the preview. All of the standard Windows applications are included with the preview; programs like Office, Windows Explorer, Office 2010, Windows Media Player, Paint, etc. All of these are pre-existing applications, which means that it would be difficult, if not impossible, to add new features to these programs. But, what is included in this preview is really interesting, because it looks like they are going to give us the opportunity to test all of the new features of Windows 8 in a new application, called Windows Store.
