Spdifer was designed to be a DirectShow filter that will allow media players to passthrough multi-channel sound to the digital (SPDIF) output without any change, so an external receiver can decode it.
To use this filter just select the formats you want to passthrough, and it will be used by the player automatically. NOTE! You should disable other decoder filters to prevent the decoding of the filter’s output. To use Spdifer in conjunction with AC3Filter, disable formats enabled in Spdifer at the AC3Filter’s ‘System’ page, and disable ‘SPDIF’ format.

I have had problems with the Spdifer filters in the past with multiple sound cards and hardware configurations. I know from my experience with it that it does work and performs well. It’s been a good base for me to look through and it was very helpful in the beginning, although I never kept up with it or modified it and eventually lost interest.
I have been using it recently with xine-gui. Xine-gui does not have the decoding functions of the AC3Filter or all the decoding options that AC3Filter has, but it does give the ability to preview and select the input sound card and passthrough options. If your sound card does not have built in speaker control, you will need to use an external card just for pass-through playback, but you can set it up with your MP3 and AAC formats and the AC3 Filter in the Xine gui option to select the codecs used with a format (and select the audio device) and then set the audio format to SPDIF on the Xine gui.

Yes, when you setup the current AC3Filter setup, you can select the Input AC3. But, AC3Filter has no ability to control the sound card settings.
Where as you can do so with Spdifer. you can set the input source in a different way and since Spdifer is compatible with any sound card, you can use other sound card and have all your audio in spdif.
