In order to free the imprisoned Black Power Ranger, the Rangers, Justin, Space Kat, and Laura must leave Earth and journey to Gurihclax, the Grim Galaxy where the Black Power Ranger was imprisoned. Their mission is interrupted by the arrival of the revived Dark Specter, who emerges from a hole in Earth opened by the Gurihclax Conglomeration’s Black Ranger. Dark Specter takes command of all the villains in order to destroy Earth, but the Rangers stop him. In the end, the Rangers use their Astro Morpher to send Earth’s Black Ranger back to Earth and the Gurihclax Conglomeration back into the Black Hole, destroying the Dark Hyper Eel within. The Rangers, Justin, Kat, and Laura return home, and celebrate with the return of Maya and his friends.
After defeating Rita, she reveals that she was responsible for Kathy’s clumsiness in the previous series, and that she was responsible for the accident that killed Thunder, and created the rat clone of Thunder. Disgusted, the Rangers refuse to fight Rita, and seek out the Spirit of Thunder, to ask him for help in returning Thunder to life. Dr. K, who is working with Rita, ensures the Rangers and Thunder reach the Spirit of Thunder, only for it to take the form of a giant robot. Dr. K creates a brace to contain the Spirit and defeat it, but she is crushed by it, and is now a guardian of the Netherworld.
The Zord of Life Force molds into an exact replica of Thunder, but the Rangers learn that the Spirit of Thunder no longer has a heart. The Rangers are offered a spirit from a Zord, but the Rangers decline. The spirit agrees to their terms, and free the Rangers from the crystal prison that holds them, but is easily shattered by the spinoff Zord. The Rangers seek out more Zord spirits, until they find the Earth Spirit, a last living Spirit of Thunder who can restore the nine Rangers’ powers. When the Rangers restore Thunder’s powers, he falls over and hits his knee as a result, knocking him out and destroying the Earth Spirit’s heart. Thunder begs for the Rangers’ forgiveness, but they refuse, and he is de-powered once more.
