to me, this album and dummy are two different entities. dummy is about this moment in my life. it’s about how i felt when i made this album. it’s about me as a person, and it’s a snapshot of me in that moment. dummy was more about capturing that moment in my life. kiss land is more about what ive been thinking about, what ive been going through, and what i was feeling. this album was really about my life in the last few years, and what im feeling right now.
each of the songs was written when i was working at the the magic shop, with a friend of mine who was also a musician. he knew i was working on a couple of songs at the time, and he was like, i should come and play some of those songs. so he comes and plays these songs and we’re recording, and i start to play around with different instrumentations and we start making some music, and he starts to play the other songs. he plays these other songs, and we’re making music and he’s like, this is kinda where my head is at. so i start using these other songs to make the new songs, and that is how kiss land started. once i wrote all these songs, i was like, well, we’re going to try to make a record. i started to think about what it would be like to try to make a record.
i still remember being right at the beginning of my career, making my first ever professional music. i came home, and i had this tape recorder. i was like, im going to make a tape of my song. and i hit play, and i was like, id like a million bucks if i get this tape to a label, and they are like, yo, we love you. i was like, awesome. i was so excited. and i hit play, and i heard all these clunky scratches. and i was like, oh my god. i wasnt prepared. it was very surreal. it was the first time i ever put all my attention into a tape.
on the surface, dummy is an album of contrasts, but it never loses sight of its inherent value: the duo of songwriter and singer. unlike gibbons previous solo efforts, the final product doesn’t shine a harsh light on its creation, but rather provides a clear view of the process by which the album was built. this makes the album that much more engrossing, no matter how cynical gibbons s voice gets after the fact. it might be better to end on this note than to pretend that portishead never made dummy, which is difficult to imagine if you have the album in your hands. but, for all the aloofness it offers, dummy remains a deeply personal work, and a personal work is always welcome.
this album isnt about success or failure, its about vibes. its about trying to get the most out of the people youve got. ive been doing all this work for so long, and its been such a long journey. its been so different and varied. it hasnt been all smooth sailing. ive had so many ups and downs, its been a rollercoaster. everything is so up and down, and ive got my own journey in mind. the song into the cannibals is me being nice to myself, and being like, you can do it. you can get through this, and you can get through this. you can get past this, and then you get to that stage, and you get to that stage, and you get to that stage, and then youre like, ok, where are we going? thats where it starts. its so weird to hear the main song that i wrote and the main song that i wrote and the main song that i wrote all at once. it feels like theres all this space and people in the room, and then we start singing this song. it just makes me so happy. i think theres something really special about into the cannibals.
