as stated above, the process control block is a collection of data structures that holds information about the process and the task control block holds information about the stack, memory map and state of the process. the following information is stored in the process control block:
the process control block may be extended. for example, an os may add a task-related attribute that only the kernel can access. if the task-related attribute includes a pointer to a new task information structure, the pointer value is added to the process control block. the pointer value is still valid when the process resumes, but it cannot be used by the user-level program.
the rcu structure is defined in linux/rcu.h. it holds an array of struct rcu_head pointers. each struct rcu_head contains a pointer to the element (in the array) belonging to that struct rcu_head. this structure is also used to perform safe removal of rcu elements during the process, called “rcu unlinking”.
the filter driver processes the data before passing it to the file descriptor (called a “file pointer” by convention) that represents the queue of data to be transmitted. the kernel assigns a file descriptor to each queue or to a specific address range, for example, a tty device. when transmitting or receiving data, the kernel sets a flag indicating that the corresponding data should be processed and that the next block of data should be sent. when the driver finishes processing the buffer, it calls a function that returns the file descriptor of the corresponding queue or address range of data. when the driver starts to transmit or receive data, it reads the flag and, if set, reads the first byte of the corresponding queue or range. the read operation reads two bytes and returns them in the data field of the struct iovec structure pointed by the buffer parameter. if no flag or data field is present in the buffer, the driver skips the following read operation. the kernel only schedules one driver for processing the data at a time, so the read operation only performs the calls to the driver for one data buffer at a time.
