Nice! And it is so nice how easy it is for a C# programmer to access codecs for H.263 video coding (in this context “codecs” means “codecs and compressors”)

But i have a question:
Why didn’t MS implement this in VB.NET?

Two reasons:

The.NET environment is a *huge* set of libraries that must be used by the programmer to do anything meaningful. (Look at the.NET framework – only a few hundred kilobytes in size!)
.NET doesn’t add a whole lot to the “libraries you need to install” thing, so you really don’t have to install a whole.NET framework environment to implement something like this.

You could also ask why.NET doesn’t have an audio library (like AVAudioPlayer) for playing audio clips.

Now, back to Codec Packages..NET has a lot of potential for anything and everything it can be used for, but, as people already said, there is a lot of work to be done on getting.NET functionality to the things that could be implemented by the programmer.

There are quite a few reasons why Microsoft didn’t include the codec pack in.Net.

– The codec pack is designed to work with.NET Framework 1.1.
– It doesn’t have any language specific extension (at least not that I know of).
– It depends on other external components to work.

Of course it would be easy for Microsoft to create a.Net Framework 2.0 version of the codec pack. They already have that code available, but it would involve significant effort (which I imagine they are doing from time to time).
