PRICE, Judge: The defendant appeals from her sentence in the Court of Common Pleas, Centre County, for retail theft and attempting to pass a bad check.[1] A jury found her guilty of the charges and the trial judge sentenced her to two and one-half to five years for attempted theft and six months for retail theft. In fixing the sentence, the trial judge emphasized *140 that the sentence imposed was the minimum sentence possible under the range of confinement. Following our review of this matter, we are persuaded that the minimum sentence imposed by the court was improper and therefore we are constrained to vacate the sentence and remand for resentencing. At sentencing the trial judge stated the following reasons for the sentence: The degree of criminal activity in this case is that of a poor victim of a theft which was intended to be, or probably was intended to be, perpetrated by an organized or systematic theft ring. The victim here, of course, was a private, private person. The victim of a bank robbery or a bank theft does not have such a position of vulnerability as this victim did. When we look at the background of this defendant and of the defendant who preceded her, we cannot say that a sentence of not less than two and one-half and not more than five years would be sufficient to deter such a crime. A sentence of not less than two and one-half years and not more than five years will also be sufficient to emphasize and, of course, it must be emphasized in this case, that the sentence is imposed for retail theft and the fact that it is attempted retail theft does not in and of itself militate against a minimum sentence. This court has held, as a matter of course, that the trial judge must place on the record a statement of reasons for the sentence imposed. Commonwealth v. Buehl, 255 Pa.Super. 17, 386 A.2d 1131 (1978); Commonwealth v. Martin, 224 Pa.Super. 84, 302 A.2d 834 (1973). These reasons are necessary so that we may make an independent determination as to whether the sentence imposed is proper. We are also mindful, as noted by the trial judge, that the sentence imposed may not exceed the maximum sentence provided by statute.
