Adobe Systems is once again the No. 1 company, although Intel is close behind. Overall, Adobe holds 49.34 percent of the global market, versus Microsoft’s 11.06 percent.
Adobe also holds the No. 1 spot in the graphics software category, up from the No. 2 spot it held last year, according to market analysis firm IDC’s latest report on the worldwide software industry.
“These two companies have very similar product portfolios, and it is still largely a buyer’s market,” says Frank Espinosa, program director for graphics and engineering at IDC. “The interesting dynamic is that Microsoft is no longer seen as a specialist on graphics, and the open source community has become much larger than in the past.”
“Adobe is really the go-to company for most creative professionals who want to produce high-quality output,” Espinosa says.
As Microsoft works to improve its image-editing tool, it’s helpful that Adobe and its software still dominate the market.
“Microsoft has been in this market for many years, and it’s got a really good footprint in high-end graphics,” Espinosa says. “It’s hard for anyone other than Adobe to catch up unless they can sell their business [a new] version of a product faster than Adobe can release theirs.”
Bill Gates, Microsoft’s co-founder, has said the company wants to create a “full-featured image creation and editing tool” like Adobe, but it will require a large investment.
Adobe shares fell 0.9 percent to $87.20 on Friday after hours.
The Windows-based software was developed by a team of former Apple employees and has a free version that runs on Windows PCs.
It includes basic image-editing tools, such as resizing, cropping, and adjusting brightness and contrast. It also gives users the ability to add layers, and the ability to group layers so they can be moved, rotated and resized as a single entity. Photoshop, however, is the most widely used graphic-editing software, which is more advanced.
Adobe’s market share was reduced from 51.5 percent in the year-ago quarter to 49.34 percent in the fourth quarter of the year. Only 11.06 percent of the market was controlled by Microsoft, up from 6.36 percent in the fourth quarter of 2010.

Effect of a selective dopamine-D2 receptor agonist on sodium and potassium transport in experimental septic and cardiogenic shock.
To investigate whether dopamine-D2 receptor stimulation may prevent organ dysfunction in experimental septic shock, we studied the effect of a potent and selective dopamine-D2 receptor agonist (bromocriptine), the sodium transport activity of erythrocytes, and the relationship between catecholamine-induced changes in these two variables. Sepsis was induced in anesthetized rats by cecal ligation and puncture (CLP) or by an intravenous injection of lipopolysaccharide (LPS). After induction of septic shock, the animals were randomized to sham operation (n = 9) or treatment with the dopamine-D2 receptor agonist (CLP = 6, LPS = 6). In another group of rats, septic shock was induced after stabilization of a controlled hemorrhagic-shock animal model (n = 6). Intravenous infusion of a dopamine-D2 receptor agonist (30 microg/kg per hour) started at the time of sepsis and was continued for 72 hours. In another group of rats, plasma catecholamines were administered (CLP or LPS = 6). In addition, catecholamines were infused in a hemorrhagic-shock animal model after stabilization (CLP = 4, LPS = 4). Organ function was assessed for 72 hours by measuring hemodynamics, survival, kidney function, and tissue water content. The dopamine-D2 receptor agonist enhanced the survival time of septic shock rats from 34% +/- 8% to 57% +/- 13% (P =.02) and prevented the onset of shock in hemorrhagic-shock animals. The dopamine-D2 receptor agonist had no effect on erythrocyte membrane sodium transport activity in septic or cardiogenic shock. Catecholamine infusion markedly increased erythrocyte sodium transport activity, and it was associated with a significantly decreased survival (P =.04). These results indicate that dopamine-D2 receptor stimulation prevents the onset of septic shock in the most severe model of this syndrome and fails to improve the outcome of septic shock. They further suggest that a dopamine-D2 receptor antagonist might prove beneficial in the treatment of septic shock. 0.045\
