Gran Turismo 5 Game Save Editor
what we are talking about here is modifying car data in the game save files, such as vehicle data, tire data, and even the car itself. while i am talking about modifying save files, what i am not talking about is doing a mod that would remove the online presence of the game. doing this would be called a “save file hack” and would change the save files to remove online save features. yes, you can also do this, but it will not work in this case, as you are creating new save files and those cannot be online. if you want to do this, it’s probably best to just copy someone elses save files, and your game will still be fully playable.
before i get started, i want to point out that save files are highly editable, but not all games support all types of modifications. the reason for this is because some games have a very strict save file format, and if you change it, it can cause issues for the game itself. so if youre doing this, make sure you know what youre doing and be prepared for some games to not allow it or just simply not work at all.
this is the first way to go about it. the first thing to do is to go into the mods folder, and you will see a list of all the mods available. to edit a game save file, just double-click on the file you want to edit and it should open up in an editor. for gt5, this is called “gt5_saveeditor.exe”. depending on the car or vehicle you want to edit, it may be referred to by a different name. for example, some cars are referred to as “gt5_r32_tires_data” or “gt5_tires_data”, and so on.
if you dont know, the in-game currency is a bit of a pain. you either race with it on your profile or you race with it on your car, and even then the more you race with it, the harder it gets to save scum. a lot of people were upset because they didnt have to deal with the issue that they had to race with it or not and sometimes this would force them to switch to an offline profile. even though i dont agree with the always online idea at all, i do agree with developers making sure that the in-game currency isnt a crutch for cheaters to only be able to gain a few extra credits per lap. so for a game like gt7, its understandable that polyphony would not want the cheaters to be able to gain an unfair advantage over the players who are trying to play fair. no matter how you look at it, its a bummer to see such a title getting hacked so quickly, and it seems its not a very isolated case either, as another game out of japan, its getting hacked.
however, the only real worry that i have is that gran turismo 7 isnt online, and ive come from a long history of online games, so there is a possible fear that i wont be able to continue my online gaming career as well as i used to if i werent on the ps5. on the other hand, im willing to bet that most of you here that like me are tired of the grind and not willing to buy-in some of the vehicles and parts. ive been there in the past, and wasnt willing to do so for a reason. im not going to do so anymore. it may not be online, but that doesnt change the fact that there is a grind. anyone can buy every single vehicle and tuning parts to get a car that can beat the game on its own. im not going to do that.
so in conclusion, polyphony im sure is looking at this from a different perspective that maybe we as fans of the series are looking at it from. but when we look at it from the perspective of polyphony, theyve made it clear that its a non-issue with the ps5 because of online games, and i think that im not alone when i say that. but i think that if polyphony does really take this idea of game saves and modify them for the ps5, i think that would be a great move, but its a risk theyve taken before that may not pay off, and only time will tell.
hopefully, we get the complete gran turismo 7 game save editing tool and we can see for ourselves how it works, and if polyphony works on that as theyve promised. and if they do, then i think that would be a great thing, and you know what? if they fail at that, we can all move on. i just hope that the player base doesnt fall apart and gets too lazy, and only plays the game when it comes out on the ps5. its a huge accomplishment that we have gt7 playable on the ps4, and polyphony isnt willing to risk that on a game that will be a huge success in the future. i want to be able to play it on the ps4. it just depends on whether or not polyphony can live up to their promise, and whether or not they can handle the entire game being online while they update it.
