Git pull cannot use terminal, but can ssh and clone

I am new to git and have a problem pulling some code from a git repo.
I followed the instructions in this post to access a git repo through the terminal.
Today I tried to clone the source to my local github repo and tried to pull the updates to my local repo.
However, I got a error message saying:
remote: Counting objects: 7334, done.

From github.com:myusername/myrepo

Already up-to-date.

However, I can clone the repo via ssh and there is no problem with pulling updates, so I don’t understand why I can’t pull from the terminal.
Any ideas why this may be?
Edit: After running a git status and git pull I got the following output:
$ git status
On branch master
Your branch is up-to-date with ‘origin/master’.
nothing to commit, working tree clean

$ git pull
fatal: Couldn’t find remote ref master

but:
$ ssh github.com
Hi git@github.com
$ git status
# On branch master
nothing to commit, working tree clean

$ git remote show
* remote github
Fetch URL: git@github.com:myusername/myrepo
Push URL: git@github.com:myusername/myrepo
HEAD is now at tz-a-new-branch

I think the issue is that your user account on your local machine doesn’t have commit rights. The git pull command you ran requires you to be able to commit changes.
If you try running the git status command you can see that the remote repository is set up to prevent commits
