Now they are a headache because they were changed, not because they are totally impractical. The biggest issues are the tools necessary to modify their structure beyond themselves.
One such tool that is available is something called Modo, same stuff.
One fun one, also, is the photoEdit, which is like PhotoShop but has 2Million more features.

Very weird. I have the same problem with a recent version of 3DS Max and Autodesk Maya. When I opened it from a local hard drive, it is just a very big text file with zero (well, empty) content. However, I can access and edit it from other computers.

One of the most common errors you will encounter when importing a VOB is that import does not assign a cubemap for it.
I cannot remember how I fixed it, but perhaps one of the old import commands will answer your question.

The problem is, Max 2012 has all the import plugins missing, so you really cannot import an “old” Max file. It’s all or nothing.
You will need to get yourself another Max, this one is free, and actually built on a word processor and not an FPS.
