the name is misleading. the two pieces of paper are for the second round (usually played the day after the first), and the third-round is best described as “training camp” – aside from the winner, at least.

all in all, the new game is a vast improvement over its predecessor. we can even find a place for the crazy controversy of the football manager game, with things like the ui being very simple and intuitive. unfortunately, though, the game is far less intuitive than the previous version. there are far too many aspects to the gameplay that are unbalanced and illogical.
the referee is as haphazard a character as you’d find in a real life football match. it just doesn’t make sense for the person behind the referee’s officials to take a knee to assess the condition of the pitch, or to stop play when the ball has gone off the pitch.
the ai is no better. during a game, it’s practically impossible to stay in your full-back position unless you’re the quickest and strongest player on the team, because the ai teams will look for away goals as a late substitution to keep the ball in their possession. this is a pretty major bug, because it means that you’re going to spend more time defending than attacking. and then, if you’re lucky, you may get one of the better ai managers (canada, sweden, and of course england) and he’ll go out and introduce a new talent on the bench. it’s a bummer of a system to have.
no matter the end result, for those that did actually purchase this new champman title, this will be the first step on the ‘nest-of-six’ journey that will see the series move forward without fm’s original creator, david rogers, and ei, or the bgs team behind it, who will only drop out when they leave the series entirely.
each of the six titles to come after this will create a new identity, and will have different approaches when it comes to how they will manage down-to-earth matters and their own faddish creative choices. but it’ll all be about delivering a quality, proper sports simulation that, at its core, is about influencing games and creating engaging stories. this isn’t an update; it’s a new journey. but it’s going to be a journey full of stories, not unlike the world of football manager.
