If you want something to be notified of changes to a particular data, and you don’t want those changes to affect other parts of your code, you may want to consider using the Observer pattern. For example, say you’ve got some data (e.g. user session info), and an object keeps a list of observers and notifies them of data changes. When it changes it just adds the changed data to the object’s list of changed data. If an object wants to read the changed data, it just collects the list of changed data and executes on it.

The Observer pattern is used when there is a well-defined event structure.
Let’s say you have a table of “stuff” and some special sort of data is added to that table. Before the change is made to the table, you want to know that such an event has occurred (so you can update your UI or other parts of your code). With the observer pattern, you decouple your application in the following way:
Your main application does not “know” that the data has been changed, as long as it can find out all the right properties and methods. The table stores the observers with a pointer to them, and a method table to ensure that all callers know how to notify the observers.
When the change is made, a new object is created with pointers to all observers of this event, and it uses a method table to notify the observers.

When OSF came out in 1992, it was possible to host a document yourself, but only on proprietary platforms.
