History of AutoCAD
In 1982, Autodesk released a special-purpose computer for the drafting market. The product was a software application known as AutoCAD. AutoCAD could calculate CAD drawings (or blocks of a drawing), generate drawings from 2D to 3D, and run in batch mode or in a user-interactive mode. When the original version was released in December 1982, it was named to evoke the initials of Autodesk’s founders, Arthur D. and John E. Novacock.
In March 1983, Autodesk released a simplified version of AutoCAD known as AutoCAD 2.5. The new software was marketed as “AutoCAD” and was licensed to both dealers and end users. At the time, “AutoCAD” was the only known “AutoCAD”.
AutoCAD 2.5 introduced the menu bar and keyboard shortcuts to change between the two AutoCAD users interfaces: frame-based drawing with the selection tool and drawing mode, and 2D drafting mode with the line and arrow tools. AutoCAD 2.5 is also the first AutoCAD release to feature 2D drafting. AutoCAD 2.5 is also the first release to have eight colors in the graphics mode, in addition to black and white.
AutoCAD 2.5 was developed for the Apple II, II+, IIe, III, and IIGS systems, and was the first release of AutoCAD for the IBM PC. AutoCAD was first marketed as a desktop application and later as a remote application for use with the graphics terminals of the time.
In March 1984, Autodesk released a version of AutoCAD for the Tandy TRS-80 Model 1 computer and the Tandy 200 line. A port of the Tandy software was developed by Digital Research. It was the first CAD application to support the cursor-key and menu-key commands, previously used only in industrial-design programs. It was also the first to support two separate cursors on a display and the first version to use multiple windows to render blocks.
AutoCAD 2.6, released in June 1985, introduced the block library. AutoCAD 2.6 also introduced new multi-step menus, and new block tools to further automate the drawing of CAD objects.
