AutoCAD 2023 24.2 [Mac/Win]
The first version of AutoCAD was built by a group of Autodesk employees led by designer Peter Christensen, who had worked previously for companies including Electric Pencil and Electronic Arts. Christensen made early efforts at porting Electric Pencil, a business drawing program for Apple II+, to the newly available IBM PC DOS. Christensen later joined Autodesk, working as a user interface designer on the development of its AutoCAD and VectorWorks products.
Development of AutoCAD continued over a number of years. The first releases for the Apple II were renamed AutoCAD in the fall of 1983 and were released in the US and UK. The first versions for the IBM PC ran on a version of MS-DOS with the MS-DOS 2.1 operating system.
It was first introduced to the general public at the December 1983 CAD Expo in San Diego, California, where it was shown as a demo on a Sanyo CP-40 microcomputer. At that show, AutoCAD was accompanied by a “64A” software version, which was a version of AutoCAD for microcomputers that supported only 2D drawings. According to Christensen, the 64A version was created to avoid a dispute between Autodesk and Sanyo, which claimed ownership of the term “AutoCAD”.
The original AutoCAD for the Apple II contained a command line interface with a command prompt menu and separate command menus for many of the drawing commands, including drawing, editing, selection, geometry, utilities, and layouts. Christensen said that the first release of AutoCAD on the IBM PC had no command line, but rather was an “applications menu” with entries for all of the individual functions and applications in the program. The version for the PC had menu items for the “view” functions (lines, circles, etc.), “edit” functions (alignment, dimensions, curves, text, grids, tables, etc.), “math” functions (calculations, units, etc.), and “print” functions (plans, drawings, etc.). The drawing commands were located in separate command menus.
AutoCAD was first released to the public in the UK in February 1984 and to the general public in the US in July 1984.

AutoCAD supports importing and exporting Autodesk DWG and DGN files.
3DS (3D Studio MAX), a “3D modeler and rendering engine for Windows”, is a plug-in for AutoCAD and AutoCAD LT. It can import and export model files, and render them. 3DS is not supported by AutoCAD LT.
AutoCAD allows exporting DWG and DGN files to Autodesk FBX (as well as to formats such as.MAX and.C4D), a format for 3D content.
User interface
AutoCAD’s user interface allows for data entry and import, edit, design and visualization. The user interface has a fairly consistent look and feel across all products, and all operations are performed from a main menu bar. While this makes designing more natural, it can also be challenging to learn for those coming from other programs that also have a main menu bar.
One issue with the layout of the menus and toolbars is that the different command groups can sometimes interfere with each other. For example, the command for “Hatching” can be used to hatch a surface, but it is also used for drawing hatch patterns. However, with the “Hatching” command only selected, it will hatch the surface of the model, but hatch the pattern as a separate layer.
