Overview
AutoCAD is a Windows-only design software application designed for 2D and 3D drafting, design, and documentation. The most commonly used features are 2D drafting and drawing, 2D construction, 3D modeling, 3D animation, and 2D/3D printed documentation.
Unlike many of its competitors, AutoCAD is not a 2D CAD program, but rather it is a multi-disciplinary design program. In its most basic use, AutoCAD is a 2D drafting and designing program with the capability to create and save drawings, plans, sections, and sections. It does not have the capability to create 3D models and animations.
The primary use of AutoCAD is to design, build, and print architectural and engineering drawings. It has a very robust set of features, including the ability to import and open DWG and DGN files.

History
The product was first developed by Edwards Brothers Software, and was first released as AutoCAD in December 1982 as a desktop application running on the Osborne 1 microcomputer.
Autodesk is credited with re-inventing CAD in the 1980s, and AutoCAD is the leading desktop 2D CAD application for general architectural and engineering drawings, and a leading business desktop application for the office. It competes against competitors from companies such as Microstation and Micrografx.
AutoCAD’s dominance in the CAD industry has led to a degree of platform lock-in. This means that a typical user has to buy the software and computer operating system (Windows) that the program is distributed on, rather than having the ability to choose the type of computer or operating system with which the program is run. This is a reason why AutoCAD is sold as part of the Autodesk 3ds Max package, as the product is integrated into the Max environment.

AutoCAD is a full-featured 2D drafting system. It has no integrated CAD program, and instead relies on third-party applications to perform the associated CAD functions. These third-party applications are known as Autodesk Application Programming Interface (API) or API-enabled products, such as the application AutoCAD itself. For example, a typical CAD application like Inventor must be purchased and installed separately.
The simplest example of the AutoCAD API is its command-line interface. This allows users to create and edit documents without the need for a graphical user interface. For the sake of compatibility, AutoCAD has a command-line interface and also a menu-based interface. It can run in a GUI (graphical user interface), which was formerly called the “I View” tool, or in a command line. Users can add functions to a command line by creating a new program, called a plug-in.
Autodesk’s award-winning collaboration tools allow CAD operators to work together through a shared model. AutoCAD has a command line interface, which is used by third party API applications.
