in february 2017, zscalers threatlabz first reported these bugs to adobe, and at that time, adobe contacted zscalers and gave us a comment. in response, we stated that these are regular product bugs and that we did not have reason to believe any of them are critical. however, in october 2019, we informed adobe of our findings that the four issues were security bugs and did not agree with adobe’s evaluation of the vulnerabilities.

regarding the first bug, the reading metafile format (rmf) record was added in version 5.0 of the pdf specification. in acrobat, reading metafile format (rmf) records are used to control the display of a graphics image. an rmf record contains a comment record that defines the format of the graphic image. according to the specification, the comment record is optional in the rmf record.

the goal of this attack is to launch a specific attack as defined by attackers that are interested in extracting specific information or making specific changes to the graphics file. for instance, a threat actor who is interested in extracting selected confidential data from the rmf record in a graphic file or making modifications to the comment records of the graphic file.

in this attack scenario, the write unembedded metafile record (wumr) record is used to embed another emf record into another emf file. the abemr record is one of the most important records in the wumr record; it is a compact representation of the embedded record that is used during image conversion. with the abemr record, the other emf record is converted to the desired format. in acrobat, any record in the wumr record can be an abemr record, emf_file (formatted emf file), or emr_comment (a comment record used to describe and manage comments in the emf record) record. an abemr record is essential for the conversion because it contains the information required to convert an image to the desired format.
