Joyce Charteris (1896-1987) was the first woman Ph.D. in physics at the University of Chicago.
Early life and education
Joyce Charteris was born in 1896 in St. Augustine, Florida. Her parents were William and Annie (Smith) Charteris.
Career
Charteris earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of Chicago in 1919. While at Chicago, she became a member of Alpha Xi Delta, a sister sorority of the University of Chicago. In 1919, Charteris began her education in physics at the University of Chicago, where she earned her B.A. in 1921 and her M.A. in 1922. While she was an undergraduate at the University of Chicago, she served as the president of a branch of the National Federation of College Women. In 1922, Charteris became the first woman Ph.D. in physics at the University of Chicago. In 1928, Charteris married Gregory Lyle Ellul in Marylhurst, Oregon. On June 1, 1930, Charteris and Ellul had a son, David Graham Ellul.
In 1932, Charteris was offered a position at California Institute of Technology. Her husband also agreed to move to California. The Chronicle of Higher Education states, “Academic work took a backseat to the family life she adored.” She taught at California Institute of Technology, and was the recipient of the university’s tenure. Charteris started the Department of Physics at the University of Chicago in 1933. She was the first tenured woman department head at the University of Chicago. Charteris retired from the University of Chicago in 1952 and then in 1953 from California Institute of Technology. In 1959, Charteris became a professor at the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana. She retired in 1972.

I wish I had someone to share it with who would understand, and that made me feel so much better. In the end, the biggest lesson I learned is that there are not a lot of ladies who are interested in random, one-sided meetings.”
