in live, midi recording is separated from audio recording. for your midi recording, live lets you use any midi-enabled instrument or software. in contrast, audio recording remains confined to audio-enabled hardware. when you record midi, you can choose from a list of a number of devices, including the built-in midi tracks of several daws, such as logic, cubase or reaper. when you record audio, live helps you choose from the built-in audio devices of several daws. for example, if you have a monitor, microphone and a speaker connected to your computer, you can select these input sources in live, but only as long as their audio outputs are turned on. once you are done recording, you can export the session as a.wav file.

if you are recording audio with a midi controller, you can include a midi export to a separate ableton live project. this way, your midi sequences can be explored with a sequencer inside of live or exported directly to a midi player.

ableton live works with audio devices in two ways: if your audio input device and audio output device are connected directly to your computer, live can use your audio output device for audio recording. in this case, you can use your audio output device for audio recording, play your music or export your audio session, but you can’t use the same audio output device for midi recording. it will cause your system to experience audio glitches or prevent audio recording altogether.
