1. The idea that “we” share the same values as any other groups. Do we really want a newspaper that claims it shares values with “teachers, firefighters, and parents” but not “the homeless”? We don’t have shared values with any such people — we just have to disagree over values that we have that they don’t.
2. The idea that we have a shared neighborhood. Even if we did, how would we know that the neighbors we view as “teachers, firefighters, and parents” share our values, since we don’t talk to them? We’re neighbors in that same way that soldiers are in battle.
3. The idea that we live in the same town. Do we have a lot in common? We live in the same city, but we don’t share interests or values. Maybe, if we passed exams and did the right things, we’d be friends. But while we’re talking about the things we do in common, we’re not talking about the things we don’t have in common.
4. The idea that we’ve been there, done that. In a city, you can visit the same places every day, and still be “fresh off the bus.” But in a neighborhood, the neighbors never went through the same stuff that you did, and they

“This university is a hotbed of radicalized political activism,” said Prof. Hrant Dink, a well-known Turkish journalist who was assassinated in 2007.
In a now-viral Facebook post from April 12, Dink announced he would be delivering a lecture at the centre titled “War in the Name of Islam.” In the post, Dink said he planned to “address the university’s ongoing suppression of the free exchange of ideas and the values of democratic debate and free inquiry.”
“I will discuss why jihad and the ideology of Islam means the destruction of Western civilization.”
He also said the lecture was being organized by the Centre for the Study of Violent Extremism.
The university’s chief communications officer, Tracy MacCharles, told CTV News in an email that the university is investigating who organized the event.
“We are not aware of this event as it has not yet been scheduled,” she wrote.
The university’s student union is also working to cancel the event. Union president De’jai Woo told the Sun that the union had received an application to host an event outside of campus, but said it was “unlikely” the application “had anything to do with the lecture.”
A student from the University of Alberta Muslim Association told the Sun they received a message from the union saying the event could not be hosted in the Muslim Students’ Association because “they did not have the proper approvals.” Woo said the statement was untrue.
“The event has been postponed,” she wrote in an email.
