I’d recommend going the free way, to ensure you can download the ISO that you want to use – if you find yourself unable to download the ISO you want from the MS website, you will also probably be unable to use the media you want to use to do the install, so doing the free way to download will save you money in the end!
This way you don’t have to worry about burning onto DVDs, and can potentially keep a clean install from older installs.
You can also use your own disk to do the install. Other than your Surface, all you need is a usb flash drive (what ever size you choose), and you’re all set. You do this simply by getting the USB drive to your Surface, removing it, then booting with the USB drive. You can either boot to the USB drive, or attach it to the Surface and try to boot from it. Generally speaking, Windows will try to install, but if it can’t find the ISO, you’ll just be asked to insert the USB drive. One of the biggest problems with doing the install this way is that you don’t have a way to see what’s going on, and you don’t have access to the computer once it’s been “installed”
Alternatively, you can go the other way and buy some DVDs. These are available on Amazon, and you can get various versions in just about any format you need. You can also get them from some of the many media companies that sell different versions (an ISO is just a DVD image anyway).
Personally, i would recommend a DVD, because you’ll have more options with the media you buy from a DVD media company.
Either way, you just need to do the install once, and all the rest is just a bonus!
