Thankfully, the iOS version of Tomb Raider has none of this and instead offers me an iPad, at which point I am instantly taken to a series of quick tutorials for the tablet. There are a few options, with the touch controls offering a different experience than clicking a mouse or controller, although I would prefer the iPad trackpad to the touchscreen. With the higher resolution character models, set against a more detailed world, this lets Lara occupy a larger area of the screen, adding a depth to her character and environment. A wider field of view allows you to see more as you move through the game, while the more detailed environments themselves have an added sense of atmosphere in the outposts and settlements. The environments and character models use a dynamic day/night cycle, which subtly changes the lighting and weather effects as the sun moves across the sky, meaning that Lara has to hide for short periods during the day.
While the graphics are great, the framerate can be patchy in some scenes, especially when youre moving around the tombs, but the game never looks unstable. This leads into the gameplay itself, which is mostly pretty similar to the original Tomb Raider, from the quick inventory system to the simplicity of exploring caves to find thematic treasures. However, the combat system has been streamlined a bit, with more options, especially the addition of shooting weapons, which makes Lara feel like more of a superhero, rather than an archaeological hunter. The shooting in particular is heavily customizable, with each gun varying in power, recoil, aiming speed and accuracy, and ammo count.
