    Sometimes there are no words to describe the distance we and Betty Co. traveled over the years. She made my mom a young woman, showing me for the first time that Black women could be dedicated to and organized for something other than the enslavement of our people. When I was asked to create this tribute to Betty, I wanted to set a record straight on a part of my family’s history I didn’t know about. Many Black people outside our community only knew Betty as the girl who stood up at pro-integration rallies, and the daughter of a nationally known leader of the Black Panthers; and in our community, she was known primarily as being “that bold speaking girl with the bright-red hair”. I also wanted to pay homage to the priceless influence that Betty had on her mother, Avita Nesbitt… …a woman who was not afraid to speak her mind even though she sometimes had to fight to be heard.

    Betty grew up in the Bay Area, and her parents, Florence and Andrew Nesbitt (previously known as Andrew Nesburg), moved to Oakland after Betty’s first birthday. Her father got a job at the General Motors Test Automobile Laboratory (GM/TATL), where he helped develop the prototype for the Corvette, knew Thomas Edison and credited him with being the inventor of the light bulb. When asked what his proudest moments were in his life, Nesburg said, “My work with the Chevrolet Corvette. The one thing that never failed was the engine, and we developed the design with perfection. It was proven to me that anything we dreamed was possible.” (Zander 1990, p.14-15)

    As a young child, Betty had a bright future. “Betty” was her name because her parents chose it for her. She considered herself a “Betty Boop”, wore a Mickey Mouse hat when she played outside, and loved to sing, dance and play all kinds of music. Avita was born on Sept. 11, 1909 in Lowell, Michigan, home to the first car company in the world, Deutsch-American.
