With the mouse
Using the mouse to draw and paint is probably the most familiar method of working in Photoshop. After you’ve selected a tool (discussed in the next section), Photoshop responds with a set of on-screen tools and a light-sensitive box that you can paint with to create the actual photo. These tools are usually found on the right side of the screen (Figure 5-3). Figure 5-4 gives you a visual example of what these tools look like while your mouse hovers over them.
Photoshop enables you to paint on an image with the light-sensitive box in two ways:
* By dragging the mouse
* By using the tools
Photoshop provides a grid of pixels that you can paint with while holding down the Ctrl key on Windows or the Command key on Mac. A series of lines appear across the image, the grid, to guide you as you drag. When you release the mouse, the lines automatically disappear; however, you can see them by clicking the Show Grid button in the Options bar that appears at the bottom of the screen. Figure 5-3 shows the grid lines in Photoshop.
You can click anywhere on the image, and Photoshop will paint a new image-editing tool on that new location. If you click in an area that has already been painted with a tool, Photoshop creates the tool in that area.
You may see the Layers panel visible when you first open Photoshop. To toggle it on and off, click the Window menu and choose Layers from the pop-up menu. Figure 5-3 shows the Layers panel open. The Layers panel enables you to add, group, and modify layers on an image.

Visceral fat thickness and its relation to metabolic risk factors in patients with the metabolic syndrome.
To assess the extent to which waist circumference and visceral adipose tissue can contribute to the metabolic risk factors in patients with the metabolic syndrome. The study included 382 men and women (age: 30-80 years) who were divided into 2 groups: participants with the metabolic syndrome (n = 152) and those without the syndrome (n = 230). All participants underwent fat tissue ultrasonography and physical and biochemical measurements. In the patients with metabolic syndrome, the most frequent dyslipidemia was low HDL-cholesterol (86%), while in the control group this was low triglycerides (79%). In the metabolic syndrome group, visceral adipose tissue was significantly thicker than in the controls (P = 0.001), but there was no significant difference in the subcutaneous adipose tissue thickness. Patients with the metabolic syndrome were significantly more overweight (P = 0.001) and had higher triglyceride levels (P = 0.002) and a higher frequency of smoking (P = 0.011) compared with the control group. Multiple logistic regression analysis revealed that the most important determinants of the metabolic syndrome were waist circumference (odds ratio: 1.06; 95% confidence interval: 1.03-1.09), the systolic blood pressure (odds ratio: 1.18; 95% confidence interval: 1.06-1.31), and the dyslipidemia (odds ratio: 12.6; 95% confidence interval: 5.98-26.74). Moreover, even after adjustment for all confounders, women had higher odds of being obese than men (odds ratio: 9.57; 95% confidence interval: 2.25-40.45).
