    My first authentic experience with classic RPGs as a kid was Legend of the Five Rings, a Japanese RPG like no other. Years later when I decided to start writing an RPG of my own, it would take a five year adventure to perfect it.

    Legend of the Five Rings created a vision of a world in which swords were praised as they should be: honorable but brutally efficient in their consequences.

    The gameplay and plots were rich and seamless. There were three schools of katas, five schools of rices, variations in how to play each school’s art with its own secret depths, and brilliant support systems for the players’ allies and enemies.

    The story was a series of epic fantasies as serious as any Hollywood film. It was what drew me to the game in the first place. The more I learned about roleplaying, the more I admired the L5R mechanics.

    So when Gygax himself was teaching at the Mountaindwelling Gamemaster Competition in 2006 at NeoCon I had a front row seat. It was incredible. It was the only RPG convention I went to that year. It was everything L5R is.
