Since flat panel displays do not require the large depth required by conventional cathode ray tube (CRT) displays, they are becoming increasingly popular in both portable and stationary applications. Flat panel displays are typically formed from a glass plate or other flat, rigid substrate which supports a layer of liquid crystal material. Viewing optics, including a polarized or unpolarized light source and a polarized or unpolarized light detector, are positioned on opposite sides of the liquid crystal material. By controlling the light source, the light detector and the optical path through the glass plate, images can be displayed on the display.
FIG. 1 is a block diagram of a conventional flat panel display of the type used in many liquid crystal display (LCD) applications. The LCD 5 typically includes a liquid crystal material deposited between glass plates. The LCD 5 typically includes at least one other element, including a polarizer or color filter. In some applications, an illuminator 3 may be included to provide light to the LCD 5. In other applications, the illuminator 3 may be omitted. The light source 7 is typically a cold cathode fluorescent lamp or one or more light emitting diodes. The light source 7 provides light through the glass plate 8 of the LCD 5.
A light detection circuit 2 is typically provided to sense the light and generate a signal representative of the amount of light. The detector 2 may receive light from the light source 7 and/or from ambient light outside of the LCD 5 and may also receive other light. The light detector 2 typically includes an array of photosites 10 that are sensitive to incident light. The photosites 10 are connected by one or more conductors 11. The conductors 11 are separated from other conductors by a dielectric material 12. Each photosite 10 generates a different voltage, such as a voltage that is representative of the amount of incident light. To generate a correct image, each photosite 10 must be sensitive to incident light and be well-isolated
