allien pulls off the impossible and fuses the dancefloor with the grandest cinematic landscapes. theres a generous disco layer and no traces of too much restraint on the repetitive dancefloor material. fittingly it finishes up with a stretching solo in the key of? the music is all muscle, all thereon a set that ranges from jaw dropping bass to acid rock. alliens absurd sense of movement stays with you long after the music stops. even four hours later, the physical effort of this album pulses with my blood, racing through my limbs and into my head. as the set wears down i find myself moving in slow motion, my limbs no longer part of the body, but just the music. alliens band is deployed in an analogous fashion, a huge bass line guiding the entire evening from start to finish, but as a band their parts are all executed separately. pulling off the impossible weaves a set of clubland euphoria, one that transcends time and space.
musically, a return to form for allien, who returns with an album with a breadth of sound not heard on her previous works. the title track kicks off the set with a mass of sub bass, riding on tremors of fretless bass. there is a low droning energy that is communicated by the keys and vibes that usher in the track. this gives way to a track with a direct and booming sound, followed by some mellow keyboards, the synths provide a familiar and comforting air that feels like a kaleidoscopic curtain has been lifted. the track then moves into another sonic direction with resonant chord structures provided by the guitars and keys before moving into a full on skank, the second of two skanks on the album. alliens acid and dub influenced tracks flow into each other with ease. the outcome is an album that prides itself on its variance and that variance helps to make it an easy listen. fusing astral jazz with the ever so prevalent skank makes for an album that should help evolve a new set of ears for some.
