i’m not really interested in making music for people. i’m interested in making music for myself. it’s like “oh yeah, i think this is going to be a good album. this is going to be a good record.” but the way i make a record is i have no idea what i’m doing when i start out. i only know what i’m going to do when i finish. sometimes it sounds great, sometimes it doesn’t. sometimes it sounds great and a year later it doesn’t. sometimes it doesn’t sound good at all for months, and then it gets good.
the record’s been out for a year, and i’ve only just started to play it. i’m not going to play that particular record for a year. i know that it’s got so much more potential. i’ve just got to find a way to do it. i don’t really know how to do it. but i know i want it to be an album that can be listened to over and over. you can listen to it and it won’t get old. it’s not like most albums where i’ll just listen to it once and then it’ll be gone.
i’m not trying to do anything new. i just want to make the best joni mitchell album i can. i don’t want to try to compete with other people. it’s like, “oh, you’re doing this, i’m going to try to do this.” i don’t want to compete with other people’s music.
if i had been completely alone when i started recording blue, i think i would have been more tentative about it. i think that i would have been afraid of myself, and afraid of what i was gonna say. and now i dont have that fear. i feel really free about it. i think i could have never done it without having a relationship with graham. i dont think i could have done it without having a relationship with someone who didnt judge me.
its a funny thing, it takes you several listens before you really know what youre listening to, theres no way of knowing if youre hearing a song as written, or as heard in the studio. theres no way to know if youre hearing the song as joni mitchell heard it in her head. in the end, the idea that each song on the album was written for james taylor, and in some cases, meant for him, is a delightful conceit. it also explains the mixture of almost giddy and giddy pop she produced for blue, but theres a reason why she didnt release it as a record, cause she wanted to get it out there and it wasnt until she did with the third box set that she began to trust her instincts. i think thats what makes her work so powerful, its honest.
i didnt want to make it to be a pop album. i wanted it to be a personal album. i wanted to show people what i was feeling. but its like a window, its like a window into my soul, into my feelings. its like a window into your soul, into your feelings. its a window into your loss, into your sorrow, into your fear. its beautiful. it is.
but that was all fine. it was a great-sounding album. and it was a great recording, by an amazing singer, who was capable of anything. it took me a long time to do my work on her, but i feel it was a labor of love.
