not all of the sentences will be of equal length. some sentences will require more support than others, so you will find that you write a longer paragraph to describe a relatively simple idea. in contrast, a relatively short sentence can be the topic of a longer paragraph. do not overdo it!
of course, in formal writing such as an essay or thesis, you usually need to use the contrastive technique in order to support your claim. the one exception would be in your conclusion (if youre ending with a thesis statement).
in most cases, you can use the difference and contrast technique to answer the question of what your claim is. for example, lets say youve just finished writing an 800-word essay that claims that a certain philosopher lived in the 16th century. is the claim that the philosopher lived at an earlier time in his life, or that his philosophy later was detrimental to humanity and cost many lives (or both)? you can use a contrastive technique to find out. but before you write your concluding paragraph, make sure you know how much you need to prove that your claim is accurate. as a rule of thumb, you can write at least 2-3 body paragraphs for every support point.
after the thesis or claim has been explained or supported, youll want to cite your sources so that your readers will know where you got your ideas. with regard to your sources of information, your three main options are:
the first type of source is an attribution. this is where your name gets put in the text. so, if youre writing about socrates, you might cite socrates or plato. the second type of source is an authority. an authority can be an expert you have encountered, or a source youve read or heard about. your name gets put in the text and the source gets footnoted. the third type of source is a chain of logic. this means you can use a source to prove a point. so, if youre writing about god, you might cite someone who read someone who heard someone who saw. your name gets put in the text, the source gets footnoted, and the chain of logic gets indicated by the number of sources. if you make a chain of logic to one of the three sources above, your readers can clearly see who the source is and what they are using as support.
