the only real downside to sonar platinum is its lack of a midi editor. i like the program’s ability to perform an entire project in the browser without loading the application, but i wish there was a similar feature for midi editing. cakewalk’s other daws all include midi editing, which is a plus.
the software works well for learning, but i’m not quite ready to give up studio one. i do wish that cakewalk would offer more integration with the studio one libraries. for instance, cakewalk could allow a studio one template to be opened directly in sonar platinum. cakewalk also should offer a way to save studio one templates in a single file (rather than having to save the template in multiple tracks). i realize that cakewalk could charge a lot for a studio one template, but cakewalk should at least offer a way to purchase studio one templates for use in sonar platinum. i also wish that cakewalk would offer more programming tools for studio one plugins. cakewalk should offer more integration with sonar plugins so that studio one plugins can be used in sonar platinum.
the three band eq is the same as in dimension, with an on switch, buttons for low-, band- and high-pass, and full parametric controls. it is, of course, great for adding that final touch to a sound. finally, cakewalk have added a few extra insert effects. all the dimension effects are there, and rapture adds more choices in the size of halls for reverbs, as well as two kinds of distortion. by default, each element has its own eq and effects, but if you want to use the same effects on several elements, you can go back up to the element buttons and, instead of choosing to ring modulate the previous elements, choose chain to next elements and share the effects. this also, of course, saves on cpu cycles. finally, instead of hitting an element button at the top, you can click on global and bring up the final page. there are the two global send effects and a global step generator, plus master eq and insert effects. the global step generator is actually two sequencers, one applied to each stereo channel’s volume, so you can have lots of fun using it for auto-panning effects.
i’m happy to be wrong about this, but i suspect some people will be disappointed. however, i’m convinced that cakewalk are the only company capable of making a successful synth, or at least the only company that could bring one to the public. cakewalk have sold software and hardware for years and have mastered the art of making things people love. they know how to make it easy to use and easy to program. they have money to spend, and the know how to make it all work. they understand that people want the ‘best’ at something, and that the best software is better than the best hardware. they have what it takes, not just to make a synth, but to make it happen. i’m looking forward to the rapture’s debut.
this is perhaps the biggest selling point of rapture, which is the huge number of effects it can stack on top of each other. most are as you’d expect, although the reverb is very clever and adds a bit of character to the sound. the reverb can be set up very quickly, but you must realise that you can only set up one reverb for each element. it is a clever trick: so long as you only select the first reverb for an element, you can have as many of the others as you need, but you can’t have them all at once. as a result, you can have a great reverb on one element, and a loop on another, for instance. the distortion is very unusual – it works by setting a high frequency, and then’mixing’ this with a lower frequency, which is then passed back through a low-pass filter to give you the result. it’s a classic ‘filtering’ sound, but not the kind of filtering you might have expected in a synth, and it’s a great way to turn an ordinary synth into a lead instrument. the chorus is a new addition to rapture, and does indeed add some extra oomph. the distortion chorus is a bit more complex, and uses the same distortion as the reverb but takes a little longer to set up.
