“In the Gospel of John, especially in John 19, Jesus is not only called the ‘light’ of the world; he is also called the ‘truth.’ John 19:34 reads, ‘Many other signs truly did Jesus in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.’”[1]
What are these “many other signs” and how might these words relate to the truths of the Gospel today? These words are referring to a series of events in the life of Jesus that took place in the presence of his disciples.[2] Whether or not the resurrection of Jesus was included in this list of “signs,” it is clear that this text wants us to understand more about Jesus, who is the “truth” and “light,” than we are willing to acknowledge. This passage has proven so significant to John’s theology that it has later emerged as the primary source in Martin Luther’s concept of the catholicity of the church.[3]
These hidden truths were often kept in this Gospel because John, the beloved disciple, may have sensed that Jesus’ life and work would bear significantly on the life of the church.[4] It is important to note that these truths were hidden, not buried. Jesus’ prophetic warnings about his own crucifixion and Easter resurrection have not been falsified by the subsequent decisions of the Roman Empire, nor will they be falsified in the coming resurrection of the elect. Though the events surrounding the crucifixion of Jesus are known, the story of the “hidden truths” is also known.
