Prior to AutoCAD, users drew a picture of the design using a drawing program, which stored the drawing in the mainframe’s memory. A skilled operator would then transfer the drawing to a terminal, where the drawing would be displayed and “scaled” to fit the screen. There would then be a hand-written description of the design on a drawing overlay for the operator to read while the drawing was displayed on the screen. This was both time-consuming and inaccurate, as the description could not be changed or erased.
With the advent of personal computing, CAD programs became more desktop-based, with the ability to work with drawings stored on a hard disk and the first presentation of drawings on the screen directly from the hard disk. The first desktop CAD was SolidWorks, released in 1985. Despite the move to a desktop-based interface, CAD programs were still not very popular and not regarded as being an essential skill for most designers, or for other users.

Essential House Hacks

Every home cook has their favorite kitchen tool; whether it’s a cast iron skillet or a countertop espresso grinder. But what if that countertop espresso grinder just isn’t the size that you want? Or what if you’re just not a ‘techy’ type of cook? Then, you need a good set of measuring cups, spoons, and bowls. Because kitchen staples are so often used every day, they need to be something you can get in any kitchen.
When we first moved into our house we found that we were short on space. So, we used a standard 12-cup measuring cup and a 3-cup measuring spoon. We liked it, but we always wished we had a larger size measuring cup and measuring spoon. But, it didn’t take us long to realize that we didn’t need a whole set of larger measuring cups or spoons. After a few years, we figured out that we could use a standard measuring cup and a measuring spoon. We realized that our cooking needs were simply not as much as a normal home cook might have, so we were good to go.
