How AutoCAD works
AutoCAD enables users to create, modify and view 2D and 3D CAD drawings. In 2D, drawings can be created by the user from scratch, or, using layers and other special tools, they can be organized into hierarchies. Layouts are created using grids, and text is imported from MS Word, MS Excel, HTML, or other similar documents. In 3D, the user can create a model using various geometric primitives, or they can import and modify an existing model (from a DWG or DXF file).
In a typical work session, the user will start by defining the object that they want to draw, or begin a project. For most people, the most common use of AutoCAD is as a drawing tool. In a 2D drawing, the user clicks the mouse to create a cursor, which they can then draw lines with. They can also make sketches and select curves by clicking and dragging. The user can also create and edit the properties of text and lines. In a 3D drawing, the user clicks to create a cursor, which they can move around in space, and they can create a sphere or other 3D primitive. The user can also edit the properties of lines and surfaces.
Advantages of AutoCAD
In addition to being a very powerful application, there are several advantages of using AutoCAD:
Works on all Windows, Mac and Linux computers.
Can be used without a mouse, and it is quite accurate with stylus input.
Is extremely easy to learn.
Libraries of tools are available for use by the user, and different tools are available in different applications.
AutoCAD is easy to use, and it can be easily customized.
Layers and groups allow the user to organize drawings into multiple sub-drawings.
Can be used for a wide variety of 3D projects, from complicated architectural models to simple house models.
Can be used by non-professionals.
What AutoCAD is not good for
There are some limitations of AutoCAD:
Does not have full text editing features.
Most applications only support a very limited number of symbols, shapes and text fonts.
Cannot import Visio files.
Does not natively support CAD formats such as STP or CGM.

Programming languages
In order to use AutoCAD’s APIs, there are four primary options:
Microsoft Visual Basic.NET: The Visual Basic.NET (VB.NET) programming language is built on the.NET Framework and is the only language that can work directly with AutoCAD objects.
Microsoft Visual C++: Originally based on the Visual Basic, Microsoft Visual C++ was enhanced for use with AutoCAD.
AutoLISP: In addition to Microsoft Visual C++, AutoLISP can be used to build AutoCAD add-ons.
Visual LISP: The Visual LISP language was initially developed to enable the addition of graphical elements to AutoCAD in the 1970s and 1980s.
AutoCAD has a large number of APIs that can be utilized with its program. The two most common methods of programming are Microsoft Visual C++ and AutoLISP, and AutoLISP is the primary language used for AutoCAD add-ons. Visual C++ is an improved version of AutoLISP and can be used to create both graphical and non-graphical applications. Other common programming languages include Java, Perl, and Python.
