Like other CAD programs, AutoCAD has a basic design function, but it differs from other CAD programs in the range of its additional features. The main AutoCAD features are:
• 2D and 3D drafting, including both engineering and architectural drafting, and the addition of engineering solid modeling;
• Extensive feature set that includes the ability to create drawings with over 85 special drawing types;
• Drawings can be exported to a wide range of file formats;
• A wide variety of drawing objects that can be created, measured, and reshaped;

Like its predecessors, the initial release of AutoCAD was priced on a per-user basis, which required a purchase of a full license for each user. The current version is the 2017 release, which was available as either a desktop or cloud-based subscription. AutoCAD 2017 is delivered as a cloud-based subscription to which software and time can be added or deleted.
AutoCAD 2017 is available as both a desktop (stand-alone) and cloud-based subscription. AutoCAD is also available as mobile apps for Android and iOS.
AutoCAD 2018 was introduced in 2018. It is a cloud-based subscription, and it features increased interoperability and compatibility with other Autodesk products.
AutoCAD 2017 provides much of the same functionality as AutoCAD 2016. But most of the new features are for the drawing functions and the drawing area toolbars. The plotting and graphics tools have not been significantly updated.
Note: A new version of AutoCAD is generally available in the fall of the year.

Software Interoperability
AutoCAD is the only 2D CAD program that is also used for construction, assembly and mechanical engineering.
Because AutoCAD is widely used in the construction industry, various interoperability projects have been completed, such as the AutoCAD Interoperability Protocol (AIP) project, the USF.1918 NIST project, and others.
XML Interoperability (XMI) is built in and is made available for all AutoCAD features, for connecting AutoCAD drawings to XML-based information for use in programs other than AutoCAD. This allows the XML to be the “native” format for storage of technical data used in design.
Data Link Exchange (DLE) is the interchange format used by the design teams for the MEP program. DLE allows for the exchange of documents, drawings, emails and other files.
Architectural Design Interoperability (ADI) and Building Information Modeling (BIM) projects are in progress in the UK by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) and the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) to develop a common model for the management of building information in the UK.
Building and Construction Interoperability (BCI) is a collaborative project between the UK, Australia, New Zealand and the United States aimed at making it easier to share information and build models across all of these countries.
British Construction Design and Documentation Institute (BCDDI) is working to develop standards and best practice that facilitate the use of BIM in the construction industry. The Institute’s National Digital Archive (NDIA) allows BIM model data to be shared in a controlled and secure environment and in a cross-sectorial format.
Bridge BIM
The BIM Working Group of the Autodesk Technical Community has been formed in the UK to support the British construction industry in implementing BIM. This includes construction project managers, quantity surveyors, architects, MEP engineers, and builders.
