A bicameral, bipartisan House of Representatives Committee on the Judiciary unanimously approved the Sentencing Reform and Corrections Act of 2017, which would reduce sentences for some drug crimes and reverse several of the nation’s most draconian laws that disproportionately affect minorities.
The bill would also make it easier for inmates to gain early release, raise the age of first-time drug offenses to 18 and create a federal nonprofit, victim-based organization to help crime victims, among other changes.
Democrats on the committee praised the bill, which would reduce federal prison sentences for offenses that carry a mandatory minimum of five years. Republicans supported it.
The committee’s chairman, Republican Bob Goodlatte of Virginia, called the legislation the next phase of a national conversation on crime and sentencing reform that began with bipartisan prison reform acts signed into law in 2016.
