If you want to create a test that depends on the user of the class to have passed in a non-null value, you are welcome to do so. However, this can be considered very bad programming. As your class will not be usable without being constructed with a string argument.
My advice, therefore, is to make your constructor public, and to only allow a string argument. Do not check for null, but instead check that the string contains only alphanumeric characters.
