This guide shows how to create a draftable model of a solar-tracking telescope. Note that this tutorial is a summary of the more detailed guide on this same page.
The main goal of this guide is to create a model of a solar-tracking telescope that is suitable for high school science fair projects. It’s not intended to be a complete design; rather, it should act as a template to which you can add many parts and make it more useful and interesting. As long as you pay attention to the steps and procedures in this guide, you should have no problem creating a functional model.
In the following steps, you will learn how to:
Draw a basic model of a solar-tracking telescope
Draw the dish and the support structure
Draw the tracker mechanism
Draw the focuser system
Draw the tube assembly
Draw the telescope mount
Draw the motor
Draw the eyepiece assembly
Draw the camera assembly
The final project will be over 1 meter in diameter and will include a camera to photograph the stars. If you use this guide and your project ends up using a camera, be sure to also read the tutorial on creating your own camera.
The first step is to create a basic model of a solar-tracking telescope. This tutorial uses the example of the simplest possible solar-tracking telescope that has no moving parts. The model shown below is 2.5″ (6cm) in diameter and 1.25″ (3cm) thick.
The basic design of this model telescope is shown in the image below. Note that the telescope is not drawn to scale. It is sized so that the final model will fit in a single page of this guide.
Before you start, you need to create a new drawing. You can use any drawing type, but I strongly recommend using Freehand Draw for this tutorial. (If you don’t have a copy of Freehand Draw, you can download it for free at Google’s Web Store.)
Open Freehand Draw and create a new document. In the Freehand Draw interface, select “2-D Sketch” and name the drawing “Solar Telescope” (or something similar).
Start drawing the basic model.
Add a title and a description. The title will show up on the model’s top face. The description is a brief description that will appear when the model is loaded into another program. You can include notes and information about the drawing
