I’m not going to tell you how to take the Preakness, but I will tell you how to bet the Southern California Triple Crown series. This is the first year since 2009 that the Southern California Triple Crown has been contested in Southern California. With the majority of the best horses in the nation competing for the only Grade 1 race in the nation to finish the year, the true test for your ability to bet the Triple Crown is making sure your horses have raced to their best ability in the eight weeks before the Derby.

Here are my picks for the 10 races, along with each horse’s track record, best bet and my thoughts on this year’s contenders:

California Chrome has been sizzling, having won all of the past six races – everyone wants to know the secret. He is currently underrepresented, getting only 15% of the votes. Everyone thinks he will win the Derby. However, the best bet in this field has to be Dullahan (72.60% of the votes, he’s my pick).

3. Sharp Encroaching (68.45% of the votes, $1.60)

This will be a closer race than it appears on paper. Sharp Encroaching has a 1:5 shot in the Derby as he does a fine work at Santa Anita. I originally had him fourth on my list. However, D’wildman is my new second-favorite pick at 2-1, having been second to California Chrome in the Santa Anita Handicap. The 6-year-old gelding is a serious contender on the grass and he just won the $2 million Remsen Stakes at Aqueduct.

I still have Gormor (54.50% of the votes, $4.20) as my favorite in this race. The son of Gormley is looking like a serious threat to the favorites, having won two straight races in which he’s not disappointed. He has five victories in his last six races, with his only defeat coming in a small stakes at Saratoga, when he rated last, behind the front runners.

2. High Chaparral (46.85% of the votes, $2.40)

Chaparral is on fire. His only defeat came in a race where the boys were clearly prepared by his rival and head horse, War Pass. He
