Paul Joseph Kickbusch is a public accounting firm at international firm Grant Thornton. He is a Certified Public Accountant who regularly advises municipalities and other government entities on several areas of taxation. He has also served as the city comptroller of Bridgeport, Connecticut, and as the city’s finance director, and in 2010 was the first Latin American elected to the Accounting Hall of Fame. We talked to Paul about Connecticut’s recently approved five-year charter for its Joint Legislative Budget Commission, which is tasked with developing New York State’s long-term budget.

He says, We want to be innovative in our teaching, we want to be innovative in our approach to our students. We want to make sure we re achieving the goals of the course, but by being innovative. The professors wouldnt identify what approach they want to use, and dont want to restrict what they can do. Theyre flexible, and the students are flexible, too, Orentlicher says. Weve got different ways of doing business than twenty years ago. One of the ways we will be innovative is by providing flexibility. The professors will allow the students to choose to take their courses in the way they want. If they want to take the courses online, theyre welcome to take the courses online, and the professors are also open to the possibility of students wanting to attend a live class at another campus. The professors say theyre looking at everything, including incorporating the use of mobile devices in the classroom.
After long thought, Carey had seen the problem in terms of phase transitions between water and ice. If the water had been turned on slowly, for instance by a faucet, it would be perfectly safe to leave it overnight. But if the water is suddenly turned on, you have a short time to find a drain before it explodes. You might build a container that kept the freezing water cool for a longer period of time so that it would be safe to leave it overnight. He and his students even built their own Coke machine, complete with timers and freeze-proof seals.
To entice the class into the ice-exploding challenge, Carey set up a competition: The first one to solve the problem would be the team leader for the project. The group would also get to design their own oven, and have a sale to show off their solution.
