While it is common for the serial number of a player piano show the year it was manufactured, it’s important to note that the serial number alone is not enough to indicate the age of the instrument. There are many different factors that impact a serial number’s age including:

Other pianos may be ivory, with little or no finish. They may have ebonies, or more recently, they may have even ersatz balusters. Even if they are in good condition, the serial number may only go up to a certain year.

Its condition — Most pianos carry no mechanical reliability indicators. Instead, they depend on their owners to ensure they are well maintained. Make it harder to identify your piano — Some of the most prevalent features of player pianos are the serial number, name of the company and type of action. This information is easily obtained from a service provider. If the service provider cannot read the serial number, they won’t know the year it was produced. Knowing this information will enable them to match the piano up to a person who can! This is a huge error in the valuation of a player piano. Without it, the piano may be worth an unknown amount to the right buyer or the piano may be tossed into the scrap heap.

The Starr Piano Company was founded around the turn of the century. In 1912 they were manufacturing the Singer Piano Co.’s Pianos in the 65-76 series, but then acquired. The Singer name was abandoned in 1921 and that is when the ownership of the Starr Piano Company changed to the Royal Piano Company.

Straighten the piano by opening the lid the down the tailpiece and remove all 16 screws around the action frame. Then remove the screws holding the action frame to the top piece of the piano’s frame. Lay the piano on its side, and remove the bottom, side panels and top cover to expose the back of the action and top horn.
