Criterion are known for releases that are a little pricey, but also have a lot of extras that the consumer rarely sees. It seems unlikely that the price or extras on these discs are going to be higher than most other Blu-ray releases, but its an interesting experiment to see if The Hurt Locker is worth it.
On the HD Bluray disc, along with the original disc, the bonus disc includes a couple of re-mastered ‘bonus’ features. The Hurt Locker: Imperfect Films, Uncut, Unwound is a documentary on the film that examines how Imperfect Films director Kathryn Bigelow attempted to score commercial success with The Hurt Locker, as well as how it has resonated with people over the years and held up as a cinema film. The other feature is called Bombing Into Cambodia: Kathryn Bigelows Trial by Fire, which is a documentary about the making of The Hurt Locker and it honestly doesnt add anything to the disc. It runs about 15 minutes and is technically informative but not at all interesting. A new doc is also included on the bonus disc called as The Aftermath which is also 15 min long but is a look at the film after its release and it again isnt interesting.
The Hurt Locker is, as Bullythespians would say, an ensemble piece. The film is a spectacular winner of the Gotham Awards and a self-confident, visceral and entertaining addition to the summer-movie roster.
Ultimately, The Hurt Locker is the best thing that I have ever seen in a movie theater. I may not rush to the box office to see any more of them, but I will go back to the theater, which is how it should be. Thanks, Kathryn Bigelow. Thanks, The Hurt Locker. You both made me think and laugh at the same time. And you make me feel good about being an American.
