a properly performed acupuncture needle is a non-invasive device for stimulating the body’s acupuncture points. penetrating the skin at these points is believed to have therapeutic effects. a person’s age, acupuncture tolerance, and level of sensitivity may influence the efficacy of the treatment, and an individualized needling technique may need to be performed. when performed by an experienced acupuncturist, acupuncture is said to be safe and relatively free of adverse effects. however, acupuncture is not a widely practiced modality in north america. any perceived benefits and harms of acupuncture must be considered in the context of the experimental design and quality of research. acupuncture is not a preventative medicine and is not useful to treat any condition or symptom that is not initiated by a mechanical injury (e.g., surgery, vaccination, trauma, accidental injury).

the acupuncture points selected in the present study were selected on the basis of the traditional chinese medicine theory. tianzhu, fengchi, jianjing, and jianzhongshu are representative points of qi, blood, stomach, and spleen meridians. these points have been widely used in research and clinical practice for their efficacy in treating obesity. the acupuncture points are described in table 1.
the treatment protocol includes the following acupuncture points: (tianzhu, fengchi, jianjing, and jianzhongshu). these acupuncture points have been commonly used in recent years. it is hypothesized that the combination of electro-acupuncture and auricular acupressure will be more effective than electro-acupuncture alone in treating central obesity. the data will be recorded by a researcher blinded to the allocation sequence. the acupoints will be stimulated bilaterally with needles, laser, or sham.
the study will be performed at the clinical research laboratory of the department of traditional chinese and western medicine, the fifth affiliated hospital of xi’an jiaotong university. participants will attend the scheduled acupuncture sessions at the department of traditional chinese and western medicine, the fifth affiliated hospital of xi’an jiaotong university. the acupuncture needles will be disinfected before use and discarded after use. during the treatment, the tcm physician will be blinded to the group allocation of the participants.
written informed consent will be obtained from all participants before entering the study. the participants will be given the option of refusing to participate in the study or requesting a replacement if they are unable to complete the trial due to adverse events. participants will be excluded from the study if they are unable to undergo acupuncture treatment or withdraw from the trial due to adverse events.
